一般看得到動作的動詞，例如： work, play, study, cook, eat, sleep 都可以用於各種時態。但是有一種非持續性動詞，通常看不到動作，如「羨慕」、「憎恨」、「擁有」、「屬於」、「似乎」、「需要」等，卻從來不用或很少用進行式時態。

動詞 have 當作「擁有」解釋時，不用進行式。
若 have 有「吃；喝」的意思時，可以有進行式。
When are we having dinner? (我們什麼時候吃晚飯？)

John said it _______ a lot of work.

(A) was involving (B) involved (C) involves (D) had been involving

John 說，它涉及了很多工作。

非持續性動詞 invole (涉及)，通常不用進行式。

也有一些字作某種意義解釋時不能有進行式，作另一種意義解釋時卻可以有進行式。

appear	看來好像	演出; 露面
	Has he left? ～ It appears so. 他離開了嗎？～看來好像是的。	How to check if someone is appearing offline on Xbox 360? 如何知道某人在不在 Xbox 360 線上？
see	了解	會見
	I see what you mean. 我了解你的意思。	My father is seeing the doctor again tomorrow. 我的父親明天又要去看病。
look	看起來	用眼睛看
	The twins look just like their mother. 這對雙胞胎看起來就像他們的母親。	Tom is looking at the pictures. 湯姆正在看圖片。
smell	嗅到, 察覺出	用鼻子聞
	I smelled something burning. 我嗅到東西燒焦的味道。	I am smelling the cologne. 我正用鼻子聞香水。
think	認為	想
	What did you think of the film? 你認為這部電影怎樣？	He is thinking hard about the problem. 他正在努力思考這個問題。
