分詞片語 (Participle Phrases)

分詞片語是由現在分詞或過去分詞結合其他字所形成。分詞片語都是當作形容詞，用來修飾名詞或代名詞。

Hearing the noise, the girl woke up.

聽到噪音，女孩醒來。

現在分詞片語"Hearing the noise"修飾名詞 the girl。當分詞片語放在句子的前頭作為前導修飾語時，通常會有一個逗點隔開後面的主要子句。

The boy playing piano is my brother.

彈鋼琴的那男孩是我的哥哥。

現在分詞片語"playing piano"緊跟在所修飾的名詞 boy 之後，不需要逗點。

Frightened by the thunder, the cat hid under the couch.

被雷聲嚇倒，貓躲藏在沙發下。

過去分詞片語"Frightened by the thunder" 修飾名詞 "the cat"。

The theater, destroyed by a fire, was never rebuilt.

劇院被火災摧毀後，從未重建過。

過去分詞片語"destroyed by a fire" 修飾名詞 "The theater"。

• 走在街上，我遇到了我的老師。
• Walk along the street, I met my school teacher.
• Walking along the street, I met my school teacher.

• 置於角落的洗衣籃，裝滿了髒衣服。
• The laundry basket sat in the corner, brim with dirty clothes.
• The laundry basket sat in the corner, brimming with dirty clothes.

分詞片語必須能清楚說明它所修飾的名詞或代名詞，請比較下面兩個例子：

Walking through the forest, the birds sang merrily. (句一: 錯誤)

走過森林，鳥兒快樂地唱歌。

句一的分詞片語Walking through the forest"修飾名詞"the birds"，顯然是有問題，"鳥兒走過森林"？

Walking through the forest, I heard birds singing merrily. (句二: 正確)

走過森林，我聽到鳥兒快樂地唱歌。

句二的分詞片語"Walking through the forest"修飾代名詞 "I" ，"我走過森林"，符合句子的語意。
