欲了解 other、others、the other 或 another 的正確用法，首先從 other 和 another 這兩個字著手。other 與 another 既可當代名詞，也可以作為限定詞。底下分別說明其兩種不同的用法。
限定詞 other
作為限定詞的 other 有“另外的”、“其他的”、或“不同類型的” 的意思。other後面的名詞通常是不可數名詞或複數名詞。other 後面若是跟著單數名詞，other 前面必須要有另一個限定詞。

information - 不可數名詞。

在19世紀末和20世紀初，紐約市旅館的牆壁都很薄，房間裡的客人可以聽到隔壁房間裡的聲音。要是一個剛上床準備睡覺的旅客，聽到隔壁房間的門打開了，有人坐上床時彈簧發出的聲音，接著就是一只鞋子掉落在地上的聲音。然後卻是一片寂靜。可是，這位想睡覺的旅客已不能入睡了，他正等待另外一只鞋掉下來後才能入睡。這就是 to wait for the other shoe to drop 的來源。它可以引申為“提心吊膽地等待遲早會發生的事”。
代名詞 other
"other" 若是當代名詞，前面通常會有個 the，以 "the other"形式出現。 the other 是指一個之前尚未提及的人或物。
注意：代名詞與限定詞的不同處是限定詞後面會跟著名詞；而代名詞後面不需要再有名詞。
Agassi held the racquet in one hand and the ball in the other.
艾格西一手拿著球拍，另一隻手拿球。
前面提到有一手拿著球拍，另一隻手尚未提及，故用 "the other"來表示另一隻手拿球。
I have two older brothers. One is tall, and the other is short.
我有兩個哥哥。一個身材高大，另一個是矮的。
兩個哥哥, 一個高大，剩下來的那一個，已經可以確定了，故用 the other is short。
代名詞 others
代名詞 others 是 other 的複數。others 只能是代名詞，不能作為限定詞。
We can no longer expect others to help us.
我們再也不能期望別人來幫助我們。
others 前面沒有定冠詞，表示非特定的。

表示非特定的代名詞 others 前面沒有定冠詞。
My uncle has four kids. One of them is a boy and the others are girls.

限定詞 another
作為限定詞的 another 有“再一個的”或“不同的（人或事物）的意思。another 是由不定冠詞 an + other 所形成。
Give me another pen.
給我另一支筆。
another + 單數名詞 pen。
Would you like another cup of coffee?
你想要再喝一杯咖啡嗎？
another + 單數名詞 cup。
我們用限定詞 another 表示額外的另一樣東西。another 後面的名詞必須是單數。
代名詞 another
When one door closes, another opens.
當一扇門關閉時，另一扇門就會打開。
意味“天無絕人之路”。當一扇門關閉時，另一扇門就會打開；但我們卻經常執著且遺憾地去看那緊閉的大門，以致於忽視掉已為我們打開了的另一扇門。代名詞 another 表示另一扇門。
When one door closes, another one opens.
當一扇門關閉時，另一扇門打開。
本句與上一句意思相同。但這裡的 another 是限定詞， one 是不定代名詞，其先行詞是 door。
